A Brief History of Grade 3 Titanium
Grade 3 Titanium, also known as Titanium Grade 3, CP Titanium Grade 3, UNS R50550 or 3.7055, is a commercial pure titanium material.
Within the commercial pure titanium system, Grade 3 Titanium has a higher strength than Grade 1 and Grade 2, and is classified as a pure titanium grade with greater engineering strength. It is not a titanium alloy and does not rely on alloying elements such as aluminium or vanadium for strengthening.
Grade 3 Titanium retains the corrosion resistance and weldability of commercial pure titanium, whilst offering higher mechanical strength than the commonly used Grade 2. It is suitable for corrosion-resistant titanium components that require higher strength but do not necessitate the use of titanium alloys.
How was the Grade 3 Titanium developed
The development of Grade 3 Titanium arose from the demand for higher strength in engineering applications of commercial pure titanium.
In the early days, when commercial pure titanium was used in chemical, marine, medical and industrial equipment, its corrosion resistance and weldability were its primary advantages. However, as application scenarios expanded, certain components required not only corrosion resistance but also higher strength and better structural stability.
Grade 1 and Grade 2 can meet many corrosion resistance and forming requirements, but in pressure vessels, piping systems, thicker structural components, marine parts and certain medical structural components, material strength sometimes needs to be further increased.
Whilst titanium alloys can provide higher strength, this entails increased complexity in material systems, processing difficulties, procurement costs and project requirements. Many components still require the corrosion resistance, weldability and relatively simple material system of commercial pure titanium.
Grade 3 Titanium was developed to address this need. By controlling the content of oxygen, iron, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen, it enhances the material’s strength whilst retaining the corrosion resistance and weldability of commercial pure titanium.
Among the various grades of commercial pure titanium, Grade 3 Titanium places greater emphasis on strength than Grade 2, whilst retaining better machinability and weldability than Grade 4. Consequently, it is frequently used in projects requiring high strength but where the use of non-alloyed pure titanium is preferred.
Early Applications of Grade 3 Titanium
In its early stages, Grade 3 Titanium was primarily used for industrial components requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.
Common early applications included chemical processing equipment components, heat exchanger components, piping systems, pressure vessel components, corrosion-resistant structural components, seawater system components and welding equipment parts.
These applications typically required the material to remain stable in corrosive environments, whilst offering superior structural strength and engineering reliability compared to standard low-strength pure titanium materials.
Current Applications of Grade 3 Titanium
Grade 3 Titanium is currently primarily used for commercial pure titanium components that require strength, corrosion resistance and weldability.
Common applications include:
Medical applications: orthopaedic fixation plates, bone screws, craniofacial fixation plates, medical structural components, dental implant-related components, small titanium parts for dental restorations, dental instrument parts and medical device components. Implant-related projects must be verified in accordance with ASTM F67, ISO 5832-2, drawing requirements, inspection documentation and end-use specifications.
Aerospace applications: lightweight structural components, brackets, covers, piping components, corrosion-resistant fasteners, non-high-strength titanium alloy load-bearing parts, and commercial pure titanium components requiring higher strength than Grade 2.
Industrial and chemical applications: chemical heat exchangers, pressure vessel components, piping, reactor components, corrosion-resistant liners, electrolysis equipment parts, seawater system components and welded structural components.
Mechanical engineering applications: Corrosion-resistant structural components, fasteners, supports, equipment housings, precision machined parts, fastening-related components, and engineering titanium parts requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.

Prior to production of Grade 3 Titanium projects, it is recommended to confirm the material form, delivery condition, surface finish, dimensions, tolerances and applicable standards. For medical, chemical, aerospace or other critical applications, strength requirements, welding requirements, corrosive environments, inspection items and quality documentation should also be further confirmed.
