A Brief History of Ti Grade 2 Titanium
Ti Grade 2, also known as Grade 2 Titanium, CP Titanium Grade 2, UNS R50400 or 3.7035, is a commercial pure titanium material.
Within the commercial pure titanium family, Ti Grade 2 is a widely used general-purpose grade. It offers higher strength than Grade 1 whilst retaining good ductility, weldability and corrosion resistance.
It should be noted that Ti Grade 2 is not a high-strength titanium alloy, but rather a commonly used grade within the commercial pure titanium range that balances strength, corrosion resistance and machinability.
How was the Ti Grade 2 developed
The development of Ti Grade 2 arose from practical demands following the expansion of commercial pure titanium applications.
In the early days of commercial titanium applications, the engineering sector required a metal material that was corrosion-resistant, lightweight and weldable. Commercially pure titanium could meet these requirements, but different components had varying demands regarding strength and formability.
Grade 1 Titanium possesses excellent ductility and formability, making it suitable for thin sheets, deep drawing and complex cold-formed parts. However, in chemical equipment, heat exchangers, marine components, piping systems and general engineering parts, the material often requires higher strength and better structural stability.
Whilst titanium alloys can provide higher strength, their use entails more complex material systems, increased processing difficulty and higher costs. Many corrosion-resistant components do not require the high strength of titanium alloys, but merely a more consistent engineering strength than that of Grade 1.
Consequently, the commercial pure titanium system required a general-purpose grade that bridges the gap between the high ductility of Grade 1 and the higher strength of titanium alloys. Ti Grade 2 was developed to meet this need.
By controlling the content of elements such as oxygen, iron, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen, it strikes a balance between strength, ductility, weldability and corrosion resistance. This balance makes Ti Grade 2 a widely used engineering-grade material within the commercial pure titanium range.
Early Applications of Ti Grade 2
In its early days, Ti Grade 2 was primarily used for industrial components requiring corrosion resistance, adequate strength and good weldability.
Common early applications included chemical heat exchangers, storage tanks, piping, pressure vessels, corrosion-resistant linings, seawater system components, marine-related parts and lightweight industrial structural components.
These applications typically required the material to remain stable in corrosive environments, whilst offering higher strength and better engineering suitability than Grade 1.
Current Applications of Ti Grade 2
Ti Grade 2 is currently primarily used for titanium components requiring corrosion resistance, moderate strength, good weldability and machining stability.
Common applications include:
Medical applications: dental components, medical device parts, non-high-strength load-bearing orthopaedic components, medical equipment housings, medical rods and medical wires. Implant-related projects require verification in accordance with ASTM F67, ISO 5832-2, drawing specifications, inspection documentation and end-use requirements.
Aerospace applications: lightweight structural components, piping components, brackets, covers, low-strength corrosion-resistant parts and non-high-load-bearing titanium components.
Industrial and chemical applications: Chemical heat exchangers, reactor components, piping, storage tanks, pressure vessels, corrosion-resistant liners, electrolysis equipment parts, marine environment components and welded structural components.
Mechanical engineering applications: Lightweight housings, corrosion-resistant protective components, fasteners, sensor protective covers, precision machined parts, fastening-related components and engineering parts requiring good corrosion resistance.
