A Brief History of Ti Grade 2 Titanium

Ti Grade 2, also known as Grade 2 Titanium, CP Titanium Grade 2, UNS R50400 or 3.7035, is a commercial pure titanium material.

Within the commercial pure titanium family, Ti Grade 2 is a widely used general-purpose grade. It offers higher strength than Grade 1 whilst retaining good ductility, weldability and corrosion resistance.

It should be noted that Ti Grade 2 is not a high-strength titanium alloy, but rather a commonly used grade within the commercial pure titanium range that balances strength, corrosion resistance and machinability.

How was the Ti Grade 2 developed

The development of Ti Grade 2 arose from practical demands following the expansion of commercial pure titanium applications.

In the early days of commercial titanium applications, the engineering sector required a metal material that was corrosion-resistant, lightweight and weldable. Commercially pure titanium could meet these requirements, but different components had varying demands regarding strength and formability.

Grade 1 Titanium possesses excellent ductility and formability, making it suitable for thin sheets, deep drawing and complex cold-formed parts. However, in chemical equipment, heat exchangers, marine components, piping systems and general engineering parts, the material often requires higher strength and better structural stability.

Whilst titanium alloys can provide higher strength, their use entails more complex material systems, increased processing difficulty and higher costs. Many corrosion-resistant components do not require the high strength of titanium alloys, but merely a more consistent engineering strength than that of Grade 1.

Consequently, the commercial pure titanium system required a general-purpose grade that bridges the gap between the high ductility of Grade 1 and the higher strength of titanium alloys. Ti Grade 2 was developed to meet this need.

By controlling the content of elements such as oxygen, iron, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen, it strikes a balance between strength, ductility, weldability and corrosion resistance. This balance makes Ti Grade 2 a widely used engineering-grade material within the commercial pure titanium range.

Early Applications of Ti Grade 2

In its early days, Ti Grade 2 was primarily used for industrial components requiring corrosion resistance, adequate strength and good weldability.

Common early applications included chemical heat exchangers, storage tanks, piping, pressure vessels, corrosion-resistant linings, seawater system components, marine-related parts and lightweight industrial structural components.

These applications typically required the material to remain stable in corrosive environments, whilst offering higher strength and better engineering suitability than Grade 1.

Current Applications of Ti Grade 2

Ti Grade 2 is currently primarily used for titanium components requiring corrosion resistance, moderate strength, good weldability and machining stability.

Common applications include:

Medical applications: dental components, medical device parts, non-high-strength load-bearing orthopaedic components, medical equipment housings, medical rods and medical wires. Implant-related projects require verification in accordance with ASTM F67, ISO 5832-2, drawing specifications, inspection documentation and end-use requirements.

Aerospace applications: lightweight structural components, piping components, brackets, covers, low-strength corrosion-resistant parts and non-high-load-bearing titanium components.

Industrial and chemical applications: Chemical heat exchangers, reactor components, piping, storage tanks, pressure vessels, corrosion-resistant liners, electrolysis equipment parts, marine environment components and welded structural components.

Mechanical engineering applications: Lightweight housings, corrosion-resistant protective components, fasteners, sensor protective covers, precision machined parts, fastening-related components and engineering parts requiring good corrosion resistance.

Is Ti Grade 2 a commonly used commercial pure titanium?

Yes. Ti Grade 2 is a very common grade of commercial pure titanium. It offers a good balance of corrosion resistance, strength, formability and weldability, making it suitable for most general-purpose pure titanium components.

How do I choose between Ti Grade 2 and Ti Grade 1?

If the component requires better deep drawing, bending and complex forming, choose Ti Grade 1.

If the component requires higher strength and more balanced overall performance, choose Ti Grade 2.

Can Ti Grade 2 be used as a substitute for Ti Grade 5?

It cannot be used as a direct substitute. Ti Grade 2 is a commercial pure titanium, whilst Ti Grade 5 is a titanium alloy; the two differ in terms of strength, composition and intended applications.Ti Grade 2 is more suitable for components where corrosion resistance, weldability, formability and machining stability are prioritised. Ti Grade 5 also offers good corrosion resistance, but its primary advantage lies in its higher strength, making it more suitable for components subject to high loads, requiring high strength and demanding superior structural performance.

Is the strength of Ti Grade 2 sufficient?

Yes, it is. Ti Grade 2 has a higher strength than Ti Grade 1 and is suitable for corrosion-resistant structural components, equipment parts, piping components, medical device parts and general machined parts. It is not a high-strength titanium alloy and is not suitable as a direct substitute for high-strength titanium alloys such as Ti Grade 5.

Is Ti Grade 2 corrosion-resistant?

Yes. Ti Grade 2 offers excellent corrosion resistance and is suitable for seawater, chloride environments, humid and hot environments, chemical processing equipment, and general industrial corrosion-resistant components.

Is Ti Grade 2 suitable for seawater environments?

Yes. Ti Grade 2 performs consistently in seawater and many chloride environments, and is commonly used for marine-related components, corrosion-resistant piping and equipment parts.

Yes. Ti Grade 2 possesses good weldability. Argon shielding must be employed during welding to prevent oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen contamination of the weld zone.

Is Ti Grade 2 easy to machine?

It can be machined. Ti Grade 2 is easier to machine than high-strength titanium alloys; however, as titanium has low thermal conductivity, issues such as heat concentration during cutting and tool sticking are common. Appropriate cutting tools, cutting parameters and cooling methods are required during machining.

Is Ti Grade 2 suitable for forming?

Yes. Ti Grade 2 has good plasticity and formability and can be used for bending, rolling, stamping and cold working of parts. For complex deep-drawn parts, Ti Grade 1 is easier to form.

Can the strength of Ti Grade 2 be improved through heat treatment?

No. Ti Grade 2 is commercial pure titanium and cannot be significantly strengthened through conventional heat treatment. Its strength depends primarily on the material condition and cold-working state.
